Finds From Wirral – Spindle Whorl

This is a rather beautiful lead spindle whorl which would have been used for spinning thread.<\/p>\n

It has some minimal decoration but the amazing thing was that when the soil was removed from the central hole it was found to contain a small piece of string \/thread. The string \/thread as can be seen from the below photos is made up of three smaller twisted pieces of thread<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The whorl has been dated from AD1200-AD1500 but it could have been used for many years and the thread is from a much later date.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The thread has been carefully kept so that hopefully in the future we can subject it for scientific testing to see exactly how old it is.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
