The Battle of Ellendune

Ellendun, the climatic clash between the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms of Wessex and Mercia.

The battle of Ellendune has been claimed to have been one of the most important and decisive battles in English history. In the 8^th and 9^th centuries, the Kingdom of Mercia was the most powerful and influential of the Anglo-Saxon nations. It had started to dominate the English Kingdoms of the ‘Heptarchy’, the name given to the seven nations that had formed in what is now England. These Kingdoms were Wessex, Mercia, Kent, Northumbria, Sussex, East Anglia and Essex.
